The Electoral College does not work on a nationwide total vote basis for selecting a US president. Bush had an edge in Electoral College votes. As an aside, if Gore had won his home state of Tennessee, he would have won the election. It's almost unheard of to lose in a candidate's home state. It seems the people of Tennessee knew Gore better than many voters.

No, the president is not directly elected by the people in the United States. Instead, the Electoral College system is used, where citizens vote for electors who then cast their votes for president. In the case of Al Gore's 2000 election loss to George W. Bush, although Gore received more popular votes nationwide, Bush won the Electoral College, highlighting that the presidency is determined by electoral votes rather than a direct popular vote.

Who got more of the popular vote in 2000 george bush or al goore?

Al Gore- Bush got in by default due to defects in the system of voting by punch-card, which was pioneered in the 2000 American elections but was too complicated for many ordinary voters to understand. There were also a few states where the result was so close that there had to be a re-count, which it is now believed was flawed due to various underhand dealings on the part of Bush's supporters.

in the presidential, total popularity doesn't matter. In 2000, Gore had more popular votes than Bush, but Bush won the electoral college vote, the only tally that matters. The electoral college gauges popularity by state.
