The lazy write phenomenon is the method that Windows 2000 and XP use with the non-journalized file system that these operating systems use. The file systems have a clock skew of up to one hour based on the implementation of the NTP system used by the OS's. The write caching component is also a side effect of the non-journalized file system that these OS's use. This is where the file is written to disk initially, but not finalized right away in case the user makes a change to the file operation. Once an hour has elapsed, the OS assumes the file operation is final, and commits the change to disk.
