The two stroke has more initial pickup because combustion happens every time the piston is at or near the top dead center. In the four stroke, combustion happens every other time the piston is at or near top dead center.

Since the combustion cycle occurs every rotation, instead of every other rotation, there is twice as much torque available to the engine output.
