First, this question repeats a common but discredited myth. ACORN was not a "communist group" nor did it ever have ties to communism. It also was not "anti-American" nor was it "socialist." It was an organization that advocated for poor people, and it had branches all over the country. At a couple of those branches, there were some issues with corruption, which were widely reported. But other than a few bad apples, there actually was no credible evidence that ACORN was "evil." In fact, it helped many low-income people to find jobs and get education and housing. But to this day, even though the organization no longer exists, conservative websites still continue to demonize it. It should also be noted that Barack Obama never organized with ACORN, nor was he a trainer, nor an executive for them. These assertions are still found on certain websites, but they are false.

Barack Obama did some work for "Project Vote", when he was organizing low-income people in a successful voter-registration drive in 1992, but ACORN was not part of Project Vote. In his capacity as an attorney, Barack represented ACORN in a successful lawsuit alongside the U.S. Department of Justice against the state of Illinois to force state compliance with a federal voting access law.
