Lee surrendered to Grant in Wilber McLean's parlor, there.
McLean House in the village of Appomattox Court House 1865, on April 9, 1865, other confederates did not hear the news so they surrendered later elsewhere.
Grant gave Lee generous terms of surrender. The Confederate Army of Northern Viginia was fed (at that time they were starving because of the Confederacy's lack of supplies), allowed to keep their weapons, and sent home. It is interesting to note that when Lee came to Appomattox Court House to surrender to Grant, Grant was so excited to meet the famous general that Lee had to remind him that they were there to arrange a surrender.
Name changes are usually handled in the Court House so you could ask at the Memphis Court House.
Appamatox Court House, VA BTW, there were many towns in Virginia that had 'Court House' in their name. So that is the name of a town and not a building.

The Civil War ended on April 9th, 1865. This is the day that Robert E. Lee surrendered his troops to Ulysses Grant at the Appomattox court house, located in Virginia. However, fighting continued until May 9th, 1865, since it took awhile for all the fighting troops to be contacted about the ending of the war.
So they can charge $25 to let people look at a house they didn't even build. How it became famous, I have no idea.
Lee surrendered at Appomattox because his Army had been hopelessly encircled and his soldiers were starving. Brief description of the Appomattox Campaign. After the defeat of his right flank at Five Forks on Apr. 1,1865, Lee decided to evacuate Richmond and Petersburg, hoping to take then his 30,000 men around the Federal left flank to join up with Gen. Joseph Johnston's army, which was falling back in North Carolina. The Confederates were retreating towards Amelia Court House with the final goal of reaching Danville, marching south of the Appomattox River, along the railroad Richmond -- Danville. On Apr.5 they found on their route Gen. Sheridan's forces deployed at Jetersville, intercepting their retreat. Lee changed his plan, assigning as new line of retreat Sailor's Creek -- Burkesville, where he planned to resume the retreat towards Danville. The Confederates bypassed Jetersville concentrating on the Sailor's Creek, an affluent of the Appomattox, where, on Apr. 6, the Union II Corps overwhelmed their rear guard taking 7,000 prisoners , including 6 generals. Burkesville had in the meantime fallen in the Union hands. On Apr. 7 the pursuing Federal forces forced Lee to cross to the north side of Appomattox at Farmsville and carry on his retreat westward towards Appomattox Station -- Lynchburg But now, Sheridan with the Federal V Corps and Gen. Ord's Army of the James, marching along the south bank of the Appomattox River, were running the bowstring and by so doing managed to arrive at Appomattox Station before the Confederate, blocking their retreat. The encirclement was completed by Union Army of the Potomac, which deployed on the back of Lee's army. Early on Apr. 9, the Confederate division of Gen. Gordon tried to break through to open the route to Lynchburg but this last attack of the Army of Northern Virginia was repulsed and lee surrendered his sword and his army at Appomattox Court House at 4 P.M. I hope I helped you.
