The school located in Avilla, Missouri is unusual because it is the only one in it's own district. It is also technically two schools in one, both an elementary and a middle school. That is why the Superintendent's official title is "Superintendent of Schools" because it is two schools under one roof.

Because it is the only school in it's district, the school assumes the title of "Avilla R-13 School District", which means "Avilla Reorganized School District Number Thirteen". It was consolidated from many one-room schools that were closed down in the last century. Since the school only goes to the eighth grade, students must decide which nearby district they want to go to when progressing to high school.
