Ayers Rock, now known by its indigenous name of Uluru, is in the southern part of Australia's Northern Territory, about 75 km from the South Australian border. It lies about 470km southwest of Alice Springs, by road, and is within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

There are many, many interesting facts about Uluru / Ayers Rock. While it is easy to find information about common things such as its height or length, there are some facts not known by many people.

1. This feature is not just a monolith: it is an inselberg. An inselberg is an isolated hill or mountain that rises above the surrounding plains. Uluru is majestically tall, taller even than the Eiffel Tower, and it certainly rises above the flat plains surrounding it. However, there is more of Uluru beneath the surface than above it. Uluru is, in fact, joined underground by a massive shield of rock to Kata Tjuta (formerly The Olgas) which are a series of bald domes about 40 km away.

2. Uluru is commonly thought to be the world's largest monolith but this is not correct. The world's largest such feature is also in Australia, and it is named Mt Augustus, or Burringurrah,as it is known by Wajarri Yamatji traditional owners. It is located in Western Australia, east of the town of Carnarvon and about 850km north of Perth. It is more than twice the size of Uluru. It rises 717 metres above the stony desert, and extends for a length of 8km - almost the entire circumference of Uluru.

3. One would not expect there to be any forms of animal life on top of Uluru because it is bald sandstone. However, after rain, the many crevices and depressions on top of the rock fill with water, allowing new life to emerge. One such form of life is a tiny fish known as the killifish. It has a very short life, and its eggs, which remain dormant in the surface dirt and mud, are hydrated by the rock pools that appear after rain. When the pools dry up, the adult fish die, but they have already completed an entire life cycle, with newly laid eggs safe in their mud coating. The adult fish leave them with enough nutriment to give them a good start when the next rains fall. As well as these fish, tiny crustaceans hatch from their eggs, then reproduce to lay more eggs. These are of the species fairy or brine shrimp (Anostraca), shield or tadpole shrimp (Notostraca) and clam shrimp (Conchostraca). When the water evaporates, the eggs lie dormant until the next rains.

4. Uluru was one of Australia's last great natural features to be discovered by European explorers. It was only discovered towards the end of the era of Australian exploration, and it was discovered quite by accident. William Gosse, who was employed by the South Australian Survey Department, discovered the rock when he needed to find water for his camels. This forced him to take a more southerly course than he had originally planned. He sighted the feature he named Ayers Rock after the then-Premier of South Australia, Sir Henry Ayers, on 18 July 1873.
