For the most part, elements are given a symbol which resembles their name as they are now. Just as Barium is Ba, Bromine is Br. However, in the case of Lead, Copper, and a few others, the names are somewhat different. They have been designated Pb and Cu due to their Latin names. The Latin name for Lead is Plumbum and the Latin name for Copper is Cuprum.
