Buddha was a leader as he taught important practices to many people and led people into a new religion. He led them to discoveries and taught them of the Wheel of Dhamma and the escape from it.

He had tremendous insight into how we cause our own suffering, as well as the ability to show us how to stop that process; he set a great example of compassion and tolerance, and his ideas spread peace, not war.

Siddhartha Gautama, The Buddha, uncovered the truth of existence and called these truths the Dharma and taught it to others. So, since he brought the Dharma to others he was naturally the leader.

A Note: Original followers of the Buddha were not called Buddhists. The name Buddhism was term coined later by 18th century Europeans .

The concept of "hero" is not generally applied to the Buddha. He is seen as a teacher, an example, a compassionate being. Heros generally use force to overcome an external threat. The Buddha does not overcome threats by force of arm or strength but by exaplle and instruction.

Because he reached nirvana and taught others so they may also end suffering. He was also very wise and had different beliefs than anyone els in that time.
