Ultimately Buddhism is based on the true nature of all phenomena, the path to arrive at an understanding of what this means and apply it to one's own self is essentially the goal of Buddhists. Many of the things taught by the historical Buddha and his students are outside of the common experience or cannot be proven yet by modern scientific methods. For example a very common Buddhist teaching; 'mind precedes everything' can be demonstrated to be true, an absolute of the human experience. Yet modern Western psychology cannot explain this to any great extent. So we have the truth which is absolute and the lack of truth which is relative, coexistent.
