Why is Chuck alive in series four of Gossip Girl when i thought he died at the end of series 3?

It was just a cliff hanger so more people would watch the show. He never died in series 3 though he survived the gun shot. Some french girl resusitated him and took him to Paris with her.. Grrr biatch. But yeah just a cliff hanger (:
