Clarence Chant was a good, workday Canadian astronomer who tried all his life to get Toronto to back a world-class observatory. Finally in 1935, the David Dunlop Observatory opened in Canada, and is considered a tribute to Chant's perseverance. For this reason, he is sometimes called "The Father of CanadianAstronomy". He was, however, much more a teacher and popular author than a famous research astronomer.
