Disneyland does not carry the slogan of "the happiest place on earth" for no reason. It is known for its joyous rides, playful atmosphere, and for the characters that little children will wait patiently in line to hug and take pictures with. When Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955, in Anaheim California, it was a 160 acre, seventeen-million dollar project that Walt Disney had envisioned. This was larger than any other type of entertainment from this era. Walt Disney invested much of his money into Disneyland but within the second year of its opening a profit was already being made (O'Shea). "Disneyland has become the world's most famous themed amusement park and one of the most visited sites in the world. An estimated 515 million visitors have visited the park since its opening on July 17, 1955", over fifty years ago (Mickeypedia 1). That is why Disneyland has been a constant phenomenon to people from all walks of life. Disneyland is loved for many things but the two key reasons that it helped make Disneyland what it is today is escapism, and the dream to live in a fairytale. When Disneyland first arrived in the 1950's it was new and exciting and it enticed people out of curiosity, but something else obviously keeps guests returning year after year. It is the atmosphere that Walt Disney created and the lifestyle that man has created for himself that makes him thrive for enjoyment and relaxation. New technology is available creating a fast-pace way of life with time escaping without even a second glance. Drive-thrus, microwaves, Easy Mac, cell phones, the internet, and many more objects aid to the fast-pace life-style that is carried by every man. Nowadays man will record his favorite television show and watch it later just so that he does not have to watch the commercials, because that would be waiting time. This lifestyle does not provide time for relaxation or even family bonding. When that man has a steady job, working five or six days a week, a wife working hard at home, and three little kiddies who adore their daddy, times come when he wants to escape from his dreary everyday life and splurge on his family. A family vacation is the best alternative but that means planning, cruses, visiting relatives, savings accounts, and weeks out of work, but because Disneyland has five different locations over the world it will be worth the trip weather it is a plain flight away or a short drive. This creates a great one day, or one week, get away that the whole family can enjoy. As the whole family waits in line for "It's a Small World," even though the waits can be long, this is where the memories are made, the jokes are told, and the relationships are brought together. Time spent together as a family is the most precious thing and with the life-style that every man carries with him it can be impossible to take time to enjoy life with his family. Disneyland gives him that perfect opportunity without needing to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on gas, hotels, food, souvenirs, airfare, or other things the family will soon forget and never appreciate. It is every little girl's dream to be a fairytale princess and to have her prince ride a white horse and slay the witch's dragon to protect her. Disneyland has created this image that every mini-princess follows. Disney has made movies on classic princesses such as Aura, Areal, Bell, Jasmine, Snow White, and Cinderella. Through these movies a girl can connect with the princess and understand her struggles, she feels for the princess and for her situation. Disneyland has created an environment of enchantment. While visiting Disneyland these girls can wait in line anxious to get their favorite princess's signature or watch the handsome prince cross the courtyard in front of Sleeping Beauty's castle. Even as an adult there is a magical atmosphere about Disneyland than can be difficult to explain, the best way to examine it is to visit Disneyland and enjoy the atmosphere. For some reason people remember their manors while passing through the entrance gates of Disneyland. A genuine courtesy is passed from Disney employee to Disney adventurer. The joy shown through the train conductors, the casher, and the ticket distributor demonstrates the mood that is then received by those entranced by Disney's magic. Experiencing Disneyland gives the sense of escapism and walking through a dream. Through the fancy buildings, beautifully displayed stores, exciting rides, and the joyous atmosphere everyone can enjoy his time walking through Walt Disney's imagination.
