Menelik was so loved because unlike kings prior to him he didn't use force upon his people. He worked so hard to unite Ethiopia as one. If it wasn't for him who knows if the war could have been won. He was once told to save something for himself and his family, but he refused by saying that everything in Ethiopia was his. He was loved so much that he got to be called "mama" Menelik. Emperor Menelik II. was the only African and Ethiopian Emperor who crushed the then world power Italia in the famous Adwa Battle in 1896. Through that not only preserved the Ethiopian souvereignity but "awake " the rest of Africans to fight against colonialism. Emperor Menelik was also the only Ethiopian Emperor who brought civilization to Ethiopia. Electricity, new currency, stamps, highways, railroads, shipping lines, gramaphone, automobiles, factories, hotels and modern media systems. Astonishingly enough, Emperor Hailesellasie, who was deposed in 1974 added not a single thing on that. Emperor Menelik II has a great-great -grand- son called H.IH. Crown Prince Professor Dr. Girma Yohannes Iyassu Menelik II. Born in 1961, he raised up in Germany and studied in London, Berkeley and Germany. He was a professor of mathematical models as I met him at the University of Bremen. Finally he was teaching at the university of Miami, FL. He was the founder and Chaiman of the Ethiopian Democratic Party(EDP) in 1991 and author of several books. Literature Wikipedia or just google girma yohannes Iyassu Menelik and follow the links
