Flag Day is celebrated because is it when the Continental Congress (congress of the continent) said that the stars and stripes would be the design for the flag of the new nation. Thus signifying the birth of the American flag. That is why the flag day is referred to the birthday of the Flag and it must be celebrated just like human beings celebrate their birthdays.

On June 14, 1777 the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution that established our Nation's flag: Resolved: that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation. Thus we recognize June 14th as Flag Day in the United States.
