Helena is the capital of Montana because of a rigged election in 1875 when the capital city was moved from Virgina City to Helena ( which is pronounced Hell-in-a not hel-een-a)
The capital of Helena was chosen because of the town's located in relation to the California Gold Rush. The town has witnessed several population booms throughout the years and currently has a population of around 29,596. The town was named Helena after Helena, Minnesota, and Helena, Arkansas.
When Montana became a state in 1894 they had a vote to chose which town would become the state capital. Anaconda was an entire town created by Marcus Daly to house the people to run his large copper smelters. Marcus Daly wanted the town he created to become the state capital so he lobbied hard to get people to vote for it. His copper smelting rival, William A. Clark, spent his money by literally paying people to vote against Anaconda as he had a feud with Daly and wanted him to lose.
Anaconda narrowly lost to Helena by 1,910 votes. Helena got 51.8% of the vote. Helena got 27,028 votes while Anaconda got 25,118 votes.
William A. Clark was a business man who liked to bribe people, he was preventing from taking a senate seat because of a bribery scandal in 1899.
Oddly enough Clark County Nevada where Las Vegas is was named after him since he built railroads in that area.
The only reason Anaconda is not the state capital is because William A. Clark bribed people to vote for Helena.
They wanted it to be named after the Greek God Helen.
Helena important to Montana because it is the state capital; because the finding of gold here was an economic boom for the entire state; some of the best people live in Helena!
