Homer wrote a very improbable account of when Hermes was still a baby he stole a whole herd of cattle from his half brother Apollo. He later served his father honestly and faithfully as the messenger of Zeus, but he was certainly depicted as being sharp-witted and able to steal the helmet of invisibility right from under Hades' nose. I think that although he was clever and wily, he was by no means an evil or wicked thief and stole things to help people.
