Isaac (Heb: Yitshaq) means 'He laughs' or 'He will laugh', a reference to Abraham's reaction when told that he would have a son. Perhaps this name helped the tradents who passed the tradition down orally to remember the storyline, just as Abraham - 'father of many' - would have done..

God told Abraham to name his son 'Isaac:'
Genesis 17:19New King James Version (NKJV)19 Then God said: "No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.
In Genesis 21, the term for the name 'Isaac' can be translated as 'He (God) is Laughing (Now).' When piecing the whole account together, we read in Genesis 17:17 where Abraham, whose name was just changed from Abram, had laughed at the probability of having a son at 100 years of age as did Sarah, his wife, at 90 years of age (see Genesis 18:12). But when Isaac was born, the term laughing took on its happier meaning of 'Joy.'
It would appear that both parents finally got the 'Joke' (see Genesis 21:5-7)
The birth of Isaac was under the most unusual circumstances. Both his father and his mother were very old, his mother long before having stopped menstruating. (Genesis 18:11) So when God told Abraham that Sarah would give birth to a son, he laughed over the prospect. Upon learning what was to take place, Sarah laughed too. The boy was appropriately named Isaac, meaning "Laughter." (Gen. 21:1-7; 17:19)

And so, just as God had said, the boy was appropriately named Isaac, meaning "Laughter" (Gen. 21:1-7; 17:19) in Hebrew.
Because, in Hebrew, it means to laugh; and Abraham and Sarah both laughed with happiness at the prophecy of Isaac's birth (Genesis 17 and 18).See also the Related Link.

The Old Testament character whose name means laughter is Isaac. His name was given to him because his mother Sarah laughed when she heard she would have a son in her old age.
Sarah was Abraham's wife. Originally, her name was Sarai, but God changed her name and Abraham's (from Abram) when he made the covenant with them. She was recognized for having a child in her old age (past the years of childbearing); his name was Isaac, and God tested Abraham to see if he was faithful when he told him to sacrifice Isaac at the altar.
