Islamic Doctrine came out of the crucible of Muhammad's life, much of which was involved in war (between Mecca and Medina), and the crucible of the early Islamic Caliphate, which expanded due to numerous wars and attacks, this violence has become part of Islamic doctrine. Most importantly, because Muhammad needed to convince Muslims to fight in their wars against the polytheist Meccans, the concept of jihad as a divinely-sanctioned war was developed and expanded.
This is not to say that Islamic doctrine is all or mostly violent; it isn't. Most of Islamic doctrine is about things completely separate from the question of violence. However, to ignore the violence in Islamic doctrine is to be disingenuous about the totality of what Islam teaches.
