The JOHN DEERe 1010 was a beautiful tractor and it had plenty of power, but at times it was hard to start, especially in wet weather.
The earlier 1010's had a round tubing front axle and the later 1010"s had a square front axle.
Many considered the earlier 1010's with the round front axles to be a lemon and one of the worst tractors that JD ever made.
The 1010 was the first JD to switch from the 2 cylinder pop pops and enough reasearch, development and testing was not done before they were manufactured and sold.
JD used old model transmissions and parts and a new style engine which resulted in some long range reliability problems, and starting the tractor was one of them.
One problem they had was that the condensor would burn up rather quickly which would burn the points, thus making it hard to start.
If you change the plugs, points and condensor regularly and often spray the cap and wires with a water proofer it should help.
Repairing your John Deere equipment can be hard to do. It is suggested to start by taking small engine repair courses at your local community college.
They are metric bolts 8mm x 1.25 pitch and are hard to find anywhere but your local JOHN DEERE dealer.

You can't... you have to buy the manual in hard copy
It may be set to run too richly, or perhaps it's trying to "vapor lock". Have the engine tuned up by a professional to start with, then see if the problem still occurs.
Farm machinery, such as JOHN DEERe's adaptation of steel plows where as before they were made of wood and could not penetrate the hard ground in the Midwest.
Frankly, it is pretty easy - but hard to believe you can't just replace the pull cord! You have to spend about $45 (w/ shipping) instead on: John Deere Recoil Starter Assembly - LG497680
I had my 1974 440 JDX8 up to 84MPH on a hard ice road.

Lots of john deere tech manuals are available on eBay both on CD as well as hard copies. Some of them are rather reasonable around $30 but can go as high as $300. The one you are looking for would be TM1561 for the STX30/38/46.
A mower may start to steer hard from many things: -Flat/soft tires -Lack of grease on the front axle or front axle joints -Lack of grease on the rack/pinion gears -Lack of grease on the steering wheel bearing -Crack in the axle itself, allowing the corners of the axle to move I have had all of these happen to me and they are relatively quick to rule out.
