Ramesses is important because of how cited he is in history. To the Egyptians he left behind of powerful legacy where he accomplished many things to improve their empire. He is also noted in the Torah and Christian Bible, however the picture they paint is not quite as noble.

He was a great king of Egypt although not as great as Thutmose I or III, Hatshepsut, Amenhotep III. Officially he ruled Egypt in circa 1279 onwards. However his reign probably includes a period when he shared regal duties with Sety the Great who arguably set up the conditions for Ramesses to have a relatively peaceful reign after the turmoil of the decline of the 18th dynasty and inter-dynastic period of about 40 or 50 years.

However, from reconstructed chronology we now know he ruled Egypt from about 650 BC. And that explains his true significance. First of all, he is assumed to be a contemporary with Moses of Israel in the 15th century BC. However, he ruled Egypt 800 years after the death of Moses. The city of "Raamses" mentioned in Exodus 1:11 was the name of the city the Jews built for Pharaoh in 1485 BC renamed "Raamses" when the ramesside kings ruled. This 'redaction' by the Biblical editors in circa 500 BC was unfortunately misinterpreted by the scholars. The Hebrew in the text does suggest a reading that allows us to re-interpret the text as "Raamses" being the name of the same city the Jews built (Pithom-Memphis-Migdol) in the 15th century BC (1485) but the name was current in 500 BC not 1500 BC. By assuming the alternative, Egytologists have mistakenly assumed "Raamses" was the name for the city in 1500 BC not 650-550 BC.

There is a warning in the Biblical text of this redaction which has caused so much trouble. In Genesis 47:11, the land the ancient Israelites occupied was Goshen later also renamed "Rameses". The difference in the two spellings for "Ramesses" (i.e., Rameses or Raamses) lies in the slight variations in the dots the rabbis now use in their Biblical texts. But the dots are much later additions. There is no historical basis for making the differences. But this shows us that the names of these cities had to be rendered differently in the texts because Memphis-Pithom-Migdol had several name changes. Thus, over a couple of millennia, about 7 or 8 names can be identified for this city that was Ramesses II's capital. The Bible's scribes had to deal with this problem. Since the 12th dynasty and its kings had become long-since forgotten, many of their records lost in the sands of Egypt, in 500 BC the Jewish editors decided to re-name "Pithom" as Migdol (its Phoenician name) or Ramesses. They also renamed the Land of Goshen as The Land of the Ramesside kings. "Raamses" was more informative for the readers of 500 BC. However, later scribes after 500 BC have not made any further redactions or edits. For example, they don't call the place "Cairo" although "Memphis" today is just a little bit south of Cairo although as Cairo sprawls out "Memphis-Raamses-Migdol' today is a virtual suburb of Cairo.

In the Hebrew text of Genesis 1:11, the verb "to build" still applies to both "Pithom and Raamses" because the Israelites did build both cities. They helped build Pithom in 1485 BC and they helped build Memphis-Raamses in 600 BC as Jeremiah their prophet reported in chapter 44 where he names the city as "Tahpanhes" (Si-en-Ptah), Noph or Migdol.

Thus Ramesses is really important because his placement in history actually sets the dates for all other ancient Middle Eastern history. Unfortunately, the date officially ascribed to Ramesses II is wrong by more than 600 years and history has been corrupted to that extent. When one considers that the History of Egypt from the first pharaohs (2200 BC as we suggest here) to the greek era is less than 2000 years, a 600 year error is a standard deviation of nearly 33%. That's a terrible error and the mess in the world as at 2011 reflects that. All the humpty dumpty academics and politicians, economists, scientists etc cannot stop the rebellions that are erupting all over the place. The Bible explains both the history and prophecy of the world. By making the Bible's historical account seem irrelevant by distorting the archaeological record, the system has convinced people and churches to ignore the prophetic account in the Bible. That's really why "Ramesses" is "so important" but not for the reasons most people expect!
