Leslie ("holly garden") was originally a place-name in Scotland.

The place-name became the surname of the people who lived there. The surname became a boys' name, and the boys' name became a girls' name. For girls it is usually spelt LESLEY, which is why LESLIE has remained with us as a boys' name.

Most boys' names that become girls' names (Beverley, Shirley, Jocelyn) soon stop being used for boys, so Leslie is an exception.

Leslie is a name that originated as a masculine name in Scotland but has since become commonly used as a unisex name. It is considered a boy's name in some regions and a girl's name in others, making it versatile and suitable for both genders.
