It is just another charity unifying people behind an important cause.
Unfortunately they're a case of good intentions. Over 90% of the animals they take in are killed. The majority are picked up and euthanized in a van before being tossed in a dumpster. These are the same people who protest at animal shelters for euthanizing animals. They also destroy property and attack people. Causing them to have more enemies then they would have if they too a less caustic and hypocritical approach. I knew a peta member once that would stage animal abuse pictures and got caught. Why not find actual abuse I say?
PETA does not run local humane societies. They do not adopt out animals, or even support animal ownership. PETA does not support the production of meat or other animal products. PETA does not represent the views of mainstream animal welfare.
PETA is one, the Humane Society is another.
Is this a retorical question? PETA is an organization to protect animals for animal testings. They also do animal abuse and whatever else that deals with animals. No its not for the eating of tasty animals. but they are against it.
There are many online references to Cowell being vegetarian, but apparently no recent direct interviews on the subject. He does some animal welfare work for PETA.
Depending on the degree of their belief, animal rights activists or animal welfare activists.
We're into some fairly technical waters here, and I'm not sure that PETA can actually "press charges" against a third party on behalf of an animal. I'm sure they'd like to think they can. However, I believe that only the prosecuting attorneys for the location the alleged abuse occurred can officially press charges, though PETA would undoubtedly put as much pressure on them as they can to do so.
Yes. PeTA, HSUS and ALF are the main ones.

Two groups who represent animal "rights" are PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and HSUS (Humane Society of the United States). A group who represents animal "welfare" is: ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Many animal rescue organizations also represent animal welfare. Though the terms "rights" and "welfare" are often used interchangeably, they represent two totally different philosophies. It is often difficult to distinguish what is an animal rights organization and one whose goals are animal welfare. Even while searching for groups to list here, I found animal rights groups included in a list that was supposed to be animal welfare groups. Animal welfare seeks to have animals, whether family pets, farm animals, animals used for experimentation, or others, treated in a humane manner. Animal rights is a movement that goes far beyond animal welfare by seeking protection for animals from being considered human property and elevating animals to the same level as humans. When distinguishing between animal welfare and animal rights organizations, those are the main points I look for, though my answer is simplified greatly and the issues between animal welfare and rights is much more complex than presented here.
They were PETA's 2009 Best Animal-Friendly Band, but I don't think they've won any real awards.
