Shelley was born near London, England, to a family of wealthy aristocrats. Although his prospects were good, Shelley's own life was troubled. As a young man, he was expelled from Oxford for his political views. His early marriage failed, after which he married Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin - the author of Frankenstein. Shelley crafted his poetry and prose as an exile in Italy with his wife. He did in a tragic boating accident at the age of thirty.

During the nineteenth century, English poetry was dominated by the Romantic Movement, or Romanticism. Romantic poetry was different from the more classical approach to poetry. The Romantic poets focused on emotional and imaginative experiences rather than intellectual ones. They used "everyday" language and topics. They showed how the lives of common people were extraordinary. Shelley was one of England's greatest Romantic poets.
