Purim is a Jewish festival that commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people of the ancient Persian Empire from the evil Haman's plot to annihilate them, as recorded in the Biblical Book of Esther. The Hebrew word "Purim" means lots, as the story tells that Haman drew lots to decide which day the Jews would die on. Traditionally, costumes are worn, because G-d's name is not actually mentioned in the book, he is a hidden presence.

Purim (פורים "lots") is a festival that commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people living throughout the ancient Persian Empire from a plot by Haman the Agagite to annihilate them, as recorded in the Biblical Book of Esther (Megillat Esther).

According to the story, Haman cast lots to determine the day upon which to exterminate the Jews.

jews have purim to celebrate the miracle that god did for them.

this is the story of purim:

the king of persia made a big party and got drunk and killed his wife. so then he took all the beautiful girls in the land and brought them to his palace so that he could choose which one he wanted to marry. he chose a girl named esther, who was a jew. but she did not tell the king that she was a jew. her uncle came and sat at the gates of the palace to check on her. one day, esther's uncle heard 2 of the king's officers plotting to poison the king. so esther's uncle told esther, and esther told the king, and the king's life was saved. the king's adviser hated all jews, but specifically esther's uncle. so he sent out letters to everyone saying that on a specific day everyone can kill the jews. he sealed the letter with the king's seal. the jews heard about this and they fasted and prayed. esther went to the king and invited him and his adviser to a party. at the party, esther invited them to another party. that night, the king couldnt sleep. so he had a servant read him the book of chronicles. it turned out that he had never rewarded esther's uncle for saving his life. just then, the king's adviser came in. he had made a very high gallows to hang esther's uncle on, and he wanted the king's permission to hang esther's uncle. but before he could ask, the king asked him how he should honor somebody who did something great for him. the king's adviser, thinking the king was referring to him, said that the man should wear the king's clothes and crown and be led through the streets on the king's horse. the king thought that was a great idea. he told his adviser to do that to esther's uncle. the adviser was very upset, but he did it. his daughter thought that it was esther's uncle leading her father on the horse. so she dumped the garbage can on the leader's head. this was really her father, not esther's uncle. when the adviser came home, he had to run straight to esther's party with esther and the king. at the party, esther revealed to the king that she was jewish and that the adviser had been plotting to kill all the jews. the king was very mad. he went out to his garden. a servant was there. the servant told the king about the gallows that the adviser had made. so the king went back inside and decided to hang the adviser and his 10 sons on those same gallows. then esther's uncle became the king's adviser, and they sent out new letters with the king's seal saying that jews could destroy all of the other people on the day that was originally set up to be the day that jews could be killed. then everything was good for the jews, and their enemy, the king's adviser, was hanging on the gallows. that is the great miracle of purim.

so jews celebrate purim to remember this great day.

Pesach (Passover) demonstrated that God exists and is able and willing to involve Himself in the affairs of this world. It also made a great debt of gratitude for the Israelites towards God.

To remember the deliverance of the Jews of Persia from an evil viceroy under a buffoonish king. The full story of this is in the Book of Esther in The Bible. Purim is a relatively minor feast day in the Jewish calendar, an opportunity for a reading of the Book of Esther, complete with audience participation. Children dress up, students make parodies of their teachers, and everyone has fun.
