Rodrigo de Bastidas was a Spanish explorer who mapped the northern coast of South America. He is most well-known for his discovery of Panama. He sailed with Christopher Columbus on his second voyage, and after returning to Spain, he petitioned the Monarchy to allow him to start his own quest, financed with his own personal money.

Spanish explorers and conquistadors, most likely headed by Rodrigo de Bastidas or Vasco Núñez de Balboa. The name was after Columbus, of course, with whom Bastidas sailed, but not because he "founded" it, but to refer to ALL Spanish territories and colonies of the New World.
