How to keep out of harm's way needs to be known by everyone. By recognizing why safety is important, problems can be avoided. Stressing the need for security in the home and workplace also promotes discipline. Quite often, problems and hazards arise out of recklessness. Lack of knowledge about dangers also increases its occurrence.

Safety is being healthy and uninjured. It is going home in the same condition your were in when you came to work. Most people see this as valuable, and therefore important.

Safety helps to mitigate risk in any given situation. If you do not take precautions against injury or damage to yourself or equipment, you may face several problems:

• Injury (which leads to medical bills or inability to take part further until healed)
• Equipment/gear damage (which can lead to costly repair or replacement of equipment involved in the activity in question)

As such, it's important to consider the risk involved in any given situation, and take appropriate safety measures based on that.

For example: If you're going to ride a bike to your friend's house and you're familiar with the trail, you may opt to ride without a helmet, though it's not recommended. What if you crash? If there's pavement, you could do serious damage to yourself.

This is why your parent or guardian will often insist that you wear a helmet in this situation; because they don't want to see you hurt, and potentially have to take you to the hospital.
