Every city is important to the US. San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area are crucial contributions to our nation's economy, and many species of animals depend on San Francisco and the Bay Area's atmosphere and climate. Also, San Francisco is one of the biggest cultral melting pots in our nation. Immigrants, especially from Asia, once flocked here in search of a better life. I could keep going on, but San Francisco is important to the US, as every city is important.

San Francisco is right next to Silicon Valley (one of the most important economic zones in America). Banks in the city provide much of the capital that drives the microchip, communications, and social networking industries. This has propelled San Francisco into fifteenth place in terms of GDP among global cities. It also has the third highest concentration of billionaires in the United States. The metropolitan San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose and Oakland, would instantly become a member of the G-20 if it were an independent nation.

The city is home to various state and federal agencies. Among the most significant are the California Supreme Court, California PUC (Public Utilities Commission), Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the West Coast's federal reserve, and one of only four mints in the nation. There are around 70 consulates in San Francisco as well.

And, last but not least, San Francisco is a popular tourist destination. The city has starred in over 200 movies. Over sixteen million visitors arrive every year. It is the gateway to the natural wonders of Northern California. And landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz are renown around the world.

Not bad for a city that's only 7 miles wide.
