It may need adjusted. Some belts will squeal just before they break so check the belt for wear before tightening.

As for the wear, one guideline is that if you see cracks across the grooved side of the belt 1/8" apart or closer, change the belt. You'll find an automatic belt tensioner on late model cars/trucks. It can be identified as a spring loaded pulley. Sometimes these weaken and fail to provide the needed tension on the belt causing it to squeak. In that case, the tensioner needs replacement.
