The Confederate commander killed there (Sidney Johnston) was regarded as the best General in the South.
Although Grant was criticised for his conduct on the first day, this battle spelt the end for Confederate power in Western Tennessee.
Shiloh was where Grant and Sherman began their successful partnership.
