The Statue of Libery was presented to the USA as a gift from France. Its famous inscription embedded on the crown reads:
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."
Because of the liberty that America gained when they became independent.
they call it the statue of liberty because all the people came from a different country and they would come to the U.S.A and go to New York so they can be free. and by the way people in france made the statue of liberty

As best I can determine, it was named by a French law professor, Edouard Rene de Laboulaye. He was one of the major forces behind the construction of the statue.By the way, the name of it is not actually "the Statue of Liberty"; the statue's official name is Liberty Enlightening the World. or, in French, La Liberte Eclairant le Monde.
Liberty island is home to the Statue Of Liberty.
The Statue of Liberty was originally named Liberty Enlightening The World. The name of the statue was changed in 1956 by the United States Congress.
