The numbers of Bengal tigers in India is on the increase. The latest survey showed nearly 1900 tigers, up from 1411 just five years ago!
Tiger population in India during the late 1800's was around 90,000 animals. It's hard to believe that today, less than 1900 remain. However, just five years ago, Bengal tiger populations in India was down to around 1411. The latest survey done last year showed an increase to between 1750-1850. So, the population is slowly on the increase now. The reason for the great decline was hunting, and habitat loss coupled with a growing human population.
Earlier, India was the country with the most no. of tigers but due to their hunting in large numbers during the period of Mughals and Britishers, their number became very less.
Not only this, even after independence, they were continuously hunted by poachers due to their costly skin and bones and today only 1411 tigers remain in India.
The biggest reason for the decline in numbers is an age-old problem -- poaching courtesy of poisoned goat, which is the bait of choice.
