Why is United Airlines laying off so many people and looking to declare bankruptcy?

As of April 2011 United Airlines is not in Bankruptcy and is merging with Continental Airlines to become the world's largest airline. There is no doubt that some people will either be laid of or when people retire, they will not be replaced. There is also doubt as to Cleveland surviving as a hub in the longer term.
