Veterans Day honors US Veterans. It began as a celebration of the peace after World War I ended, and was originally called Armistice Day (armistice refers to the end of open hostilities which began on November 11, 1918. The peace treaty ending WWI was signed in June, 1919).
The day is so named because it honors those veterans who served in the Armed Services .
