Wild Bill Hickok is famous in South Dakota because he was killed in Deadwood, South Dakota in 1876. Hickok, a famous gunfighter, was playing cards at a saloon, with his back to the door, when the gunslinger, Jack McCall, entered the saloon and shot Hickok in the back of the head. According to legend, Hickok held pairs of black aces and black eights when he died, a combination that has since been known as the Dead Man's Hand.
