William T. Sherman became famous a Union general during the US Civil War. There is no doubt that he was an excellent major general. Unfortunately he joined in with his commander US Grant and US President Lincoln in using a scorched earth policy in the later part of the war. They destroyed the farms and any wealth they could find among the Southern population. The idea was to deny the Confederate army of supplies, however, the mean spirited acts against civilians were done partially by hate. His own words convict him on that. As an aside, after the war he commanded US troops who massacred Native American Tribes without mercy. He was a cruel man by any measure one could take. Some people consider him a hero.
