In the 1940's, Boeing's naming convention at the time was to have the 300-400 series reserved for military planes, 500 series for turbine engines, 600 series for rockets and missiles, and 700 series for jet passenger planes. It was later decided for marketing purposes that any planes with the numerical designation that starts and ends with a "7" is reserved for passenger planes. So, this is why the 747 is named this way.
