I have to guess you walk everywhere or are never in car going somewhere or someplace because you ask this question. If you go to school in a car or the store you more than likely go in a car. Imagine not having one. A 100 years ago there weren't cars and people had to live near downtown, stores, schools, and government buildings because they had to walk there. I challenge you to walk everywhere for a week because after doing that you will understand why cars are needed.
