Biopsy for breast cancer- A diagnosis of Breast cancer can be made by fine needle aspiration cytology alone but is largely dependent on the expertise of the cytopathologist. To know with certainity whether a one is dealing with invasive or non invasive breast cancer the best method is to perform a core needle biopsy. This not only confirms the diagnosis but also gives additional information like receptor status and Her 2 neu expression. This information can influence the treatment given to the patient especially if chemotherapy is being planned first. The other biopsies which can give similar information are incisional(small piece of tissue obtained by cutting) and excisional biopsies( removing the entire tumour surgically).

Breast biopsy involves getting a sample of breast tissue for microscopic examination for diagnostic purpose and to exclude cancer. Needle biopsy is done with a needle and can be done under a local anaesthetic, but an open biopsy requires a general anaesthetic.

A biopsy is a procedure that cuts out a small piece of tissue or skin from on or inside the body.

If the tissue sample is being done close to or on the skin surface, it can be cut out using a scalpel and bandaged relatively quickly and easily.

If the tissue sample is coming from deeper inside the body than a hole is cut and a long tubular device with a claw on the end is sent to probe into the body. The claw grabs and cuts a small tissue sample from the target organ inside the body.

The basic idea of a biopsy is the same no matter where its taking place in the body, its simply a tissue sample. The procedure used to obtain that sample is customized to reach the targeted area with minimal additional damage.

A breast biopsy is simply a biopsy that targets the breast tissue for a sample. Depending on how deep the sample needs to be taken from the doctor will decide which tools to use to reach the target area.

Most biopsy are minimally invasive and often performed as out patient surgery with only a mild or local anesthetic.
