The cheetah is built for speed and rapid sprinting power, and needs large amounts of oxygen to fuel the burning of sugar in its muscles. It needs to breath in a large amount of oxygen very quickly, so it needs large lungs. The deep chest is designed to hold these large lungs.

After a cheetah runs, you can see him breathing very deeply in order to replace the oxygen and feed his muscles so that he can recover from the fast sprint.
