Why is a democratic government better than any other form of government?

The benefit of a democratic government is ostensibly the idea that leaders can be held to account by the population as opposed to having complete and total free rein to rule over the population dictatorially.

If the term of "democratic" means that a nation's citizens have the right to vote on matters concerning their own government, then clearly such a nation has a better government where the citizens have no power to vote. Without citizen's voting for public office holders, it is easy for dictatorships to be formed.
