During the story of Hanukkah, the Jewish people were banned from learning there Torah as a connection to G-d. Some Jewish men used to go out to the caves around the cities with young children to go learn secretly. When the patrolling Greek soldiers would show up in the area, the children would pull out little tops to say that they were just playing games in the fields.

The reason there is the four Hebrew letters : Nun Gimmel Hey Shin is because it stands for Nes Gadol Haya Sham. Meaning a great miracle happened there (in Jerusalem).
