Because the web shows how organisms may have multiple food sources - in fact some consumers may consume some food sources either directly or by consuming an organism that consumes the food. As an example - people may eat corn or pork that has been fed corn. A food CHAIN would show EITHER the person eating the pork OR eating the corn, but not both. Also multiple organisms may consume the same food source and then be food for multiple consumers. A flower may provide food to both bees and deer while a bear may eat the honey from the bees or chase off coyotes or wolves who have killed a deer and then eat it. Likewise, people hunt deer and also eat honey. A chain is a linear, sequential relationship, while reality is much more interconnected and complex.
