Best Answer

Moving a joystick handle and pressing joystick buttons sends codes through the connecting wire into the computer. A program in the computer receives these input codes and decides what to do. It can ignore it. It can move a cursor around. It can move a character around on the screen. It can make a character on the screen jump. It can make a weapon on the screen shoot or change weapons. All based on the receiving information from the Joystick input device.

A joystick is connected to the processor of the computer either by a wire or by a wireless device. It works like a keypad except that it uses the position of the stick to determined the signal it sends rather the pressing of a key. Moving the stick causes an electrical signal to be generated and sent in to the processor. These signals are translated into actions by the processor.
