First World War. Miners would dig tunnels underneath the enemies trenches and fill them with explosives and then blow them up. Same principal as landmines, only the quantity nowadays is a lot smaller.

The miners were part of the Miners and Sappers which later (in the UK) became the Royal Engineers.
