A map scale is very useful for providing a visual idea of the distance from location to another on the map. The scale is made smaller to show a comparison to the actual size in distance.

The map scale often will show distance in both miles and kilometers. In that way, the map is useful no matter what measure the person normally employs.
As an example, a map with a scale of 1:50,000 (one to fifty thousand centimetres) means that 1 centimetre measured on the map, represents 50,000 centimetre on the ground. Without knowing a map's scale. distance would be difficult to measure.
The three fundamental properties are; Map Scale, Map Projections, and Symbols on Maps. I hope this is useful I found it in my Human Geography text book.
Map scales are used so that you can tell the exact distance from place to place for example if youy have a map with a large town adn you are wanting to travel from a shop to the CBD you would want to know approximatly how far this would be. you wouldn't want to start driving adn find out its 5okms away. Hope this was useful
(example:)while driving from San Francisco to Boston
because a road map tell the usual direction your heading its different from the other maps like the middle east map because your don't know the distant from that map only a road map does
The SCALE of the map indicates the relationship between distances measured on a map and the actual distances.
