∙ 9y agoMany people think that putting a telescope on top of a mountain is so it is closer to the stars. The real reason is that by placing a telescope on the mountaintop, there is less atmosphere to look through and distort the images. There is also less light pollution on the mountain top.

- One is above the clouds and thus can get a clear view of the stars every night.
- One is up where the atmosphere is thin and thus there is less atmospheric distortion.
- Also mountain tops are usually uninhabited and therefore the sky is dark and unpolluted by man made light. This makes the seeing better.
- Finally there is less water vapour and the drier air makes it possible to do better spectroscopic analysis of starlight.
