We are responsible for implementing the doctors orders. We are the last person to decide that the orders are appropriate. In order to do so we must well trained in pharmacology and physiology. Will the drug I am giving fix the problem this patient has and what will be the side effects We follow complicated protocols based on a set of signs and symptoms to choose the correct courses of action.
It would be easy just to follow the orders but sometimes the orders are wrong or nor longer needed and we must recognize the situation and notify the physician. MDs get 11 years of training to do this and Rns get about 2 years to learn most of the same things. So you have to be really good at critical thinking about biological systems. We organize the care of the patient from many differnet departments during the day. And most importantly we care for the overall well being of the patient dealing with his fears and lack of knowledge about the medical processes being performed. You have to study all aspects of medical disease processes in order to teach the patient about them. The doctor may say it once but in order to learn it a patient must be told more than once because of the complexity of the body.
If you miss anything important and the patient is harmed then it is your responsiblity and you are liable for your actions. Saying the Doctor ordered me to do this is will not absolve you of the responsibilty. We get paid a lot of money because we save peoples lives with our decisions everyday.

Personally, I have decided to become a nurse because my passion in life is for helping people. As a 10 year old child, my 11 year old sister was diagnosed with a rare condition called Guillain-Barre Syndrome and spent 2 months in the hospital recovering. It was at this point in my life that I decided that I would become a nurse one day to help people during their stay in the hospital. I'm sure every nurse has a different story, and many of them probably choose nursing as a career because of job security or salary, but most will share a passion for people.
