It is recorded from three differences because you can do two tests and they can meet at one spot but it may not be the actual epicenter. They do the third test to be ssure they have the right spot or epicenter.

3 are needed because when a seismic record is made it is like a big circle. When all three circles cross each other in one spot that is where the epicenter is. That is why you need 3 to determine it's location.when all the circles meet up,they have a spot when the circles are fully the location of an epicenter.
