Aircraft skin is made from an aluminum alloy material, often coated with pure aluminum to resist corrosion.

Welding is a process that uses electrical current to melt the base metal to form a continuous joint in usually ferrous (iron) materials. Whilst it is possible to weld aluminum it is not used for the following reasons:

1.Heating aluminum alloys causes them to take on a hardness which would then need to be removed by further heat treatment. It's hard to put a whole aircraft into an oven to heat it to 300C to anneal it.. there are no ovens that big.

2. A weld is stiffer than the surrounding material. It would therefore be prone to crack. If you want to sit in a tin can at 10,000M when that weld opens that's up to you.

3. The surface corrosion protection of the pure aluminum would also be lost in the heat of the weld.

4. Rivets are reliable, strong and easily removed and replaced in case of repair.

Welds are an unreliable method of joining materials, they cause oxidation and heat damage. They cause inclusions which can cause cracks and corrosion and all welds are variable in terms of depth and strength, even when made by machine.

Not for aircraft!

What are rivets used for?

Before use an ordinary rivet is just a short cylinder of metal. The two sheets to be joined are positioned as desired and then held together temporarily so that a hole can be bored through them slightly larger than the diameter of the rivet. The rivet is inserted so that part of it extends on each side of the two plates. Now these parts of the rivet can be simultaneously rounded over so that the two ends of the rivet make shapes like the cap of a mushroom on either side of the plates so that they can no longer be taken apart. The link shows several finished examples.

Mode of failure of riveted joints?

1)Tearing of the plates between the hole if they are very near to each other 2)Tearing of plate betw.een the edge of the plate and rivet hole if the hole is too near the edge. 3)Shearing the rivet if the diameter is smaller than necessary

Which is stronger between a rivet and a bolt?

A riveted connection requires much more force to break the connection than a bolted connection. Furthermore, a bolt can become loosened by vibration which is highly unlikely in a riveted connection. Therefore, a bolt is weaker than a rivet.

Instead of aircraft battery is 24 volt dc why aircraft use 28 volt dc?

An aircraft battery is usually 28 volts DC because the need for power is greater in an aircraft than in a diesel truck. Having the 4 extra volts is a type of insurance policy so that the battery does not go dead while the plane is in the air.
